Please Note: If ordering worms with a Hungry Bin the worms come direct from our worm growers so they will not arrive together. We try to co-ordinate that they arrive as close together as possible but don't panic. The worms will last in the box and compost they are in for up to 4 weeks. So also no major rush in getting your Hungry Bin set up if that is what you are using them for.

500 gram pack of composting worms for use in the 'Hungry Bin' wormery. 500G is approx 1500 - 2000 worms depending on the size of the worms. The 500 gram pack can also be used to re-start a disused Worm Works wormery or any other worm farm.

In ideal conditions the worms will double their numbers in 6 weeks providing there is sufficient food available. The full population of worms in a Hungry Bin wormery is 16,000 worms, if you start with 2000 worms this will take 18 weeks to achieve. 500G or 200 worms is the minimum required to start your Hungry Bin. The more worms you add at the start, the quicker your bin will reach full processing capacity.

My new worm friends arrived in good order. Packaging must have changed as I had seen this was a problem in past. Good service and product.

Happy with the product, packaging could have been better managed as not all the worms survived delivery-maybe consider an insulated box instead of a sack.

I liked the fact that my order arrived securely sealed and contained in a protective plastic box

Will the worms survive in a hot bin composter? I have a tumbler bin but also plan to buy a hot bin composter.

will these worms survive in southwest scotland 3-20 degrees weather?

Once there is deep enough compost for them to go in to the centre off they will survive down to minus 10 for a few weeks. If it was this cold for a longer period and the centre of the compost was to freeze you would loose them Niall Quickcrop

If I am just starting to use the hungry bin and I am in a one person household, how soon do I need to get the worms? Also, are you able to put the little green compost bags into the composter?
Answered by Niall

Hi Deirdre I would get the worms in to the unit as early as you can as it takes a bit of time for them to settle in to the compost before they start to eat the waste. I wouldn't put the compost bags in the Hungry bin. They break down with heat as in the Hotbin or Joraform composters but they won't break down in the Hungry Bin Niall Quickcrop

How does one separate the worms from the compost when it is ready for use
Answered by Niall

Hi Rodney The worms will tend to follow the fresher the compost and food (kitchen waste etc) that you have added so if you turn the compost and use the older stuff there will be very few worms in that. That said if you do transfer some to the general garden the population left will produce more as they self regulate themselves. Particularly coming in to the Spring with temperatures rising Niall Quickcrop
